The shift in custom PC building sparked a lot of interest at CES 2024 with talk of “the War on Cables,” but the revolution is still in its early stages. Three similar implementations by MSI, MainGear, and Asus are competing to mount power and data cables on the rear of the motherboard and case. The challenge lies in getting consumers, system integrators, and case makers on board and sorting out patent ownership and complex build issues. Leo Waldock, a Senior Technical Writer, raised concerns about the practicality of the new design for at-home system builders. The industry’s treatment and standardization of this emerging trend will determine its success. Subscribe to PCWorld on YouTube for more insights into the future of PC building.
