Laptop computers prioritize portability over utility. Lenovo aims to bridge this gap with a new laptop accessory called “Magic Bay.” A modular expansion dock for the ThinkBook 13X and ThinkBook 16P, it houses strong magnets and POGO pins for fast USB 3.0 connections, allowing easy attachment and removal of extra devices. The first showcase is a 4K camera with extra speakers. Additional ideas on display include a microphone, card reader, circular screen for emojis, and even a cooling fan and aromatherapy scent spreader. These modules are magnetically attached and removed.

The Magic Bay Studio camera in particular seems promising, with features comparable to high-end webcams, but with the added convenience of attachment via a magnetic dock. The Magic Bay attachment, known as Magic Bay Studio, will be available in April for $199.99. The launch of the ThinkBook 13X Gen 4 and ThinkBook 16P Gen 5 is expected in the first quarter of 2024 at a starting price of $1,399 and $1,599 respectively.
