The Steam Deck is being turned into a giant Nintendo DS for emulation purposes. Andrew from RetroHandhelds.gg attempted this by using a 7-inch USB display and a small USB-C dock with a shell case. He documented his process and provided links for those interested in trying it themselves. The software side was easy, running a Nintendo 3DS emulator on the Steam Deck’s Linux-based software in desktop mode. The trick with DS emulation is dealing with the dual screens, but with an external display connected to the Steam Deck, it’s much simpler. Despite the impressive end result, Andrew found the physical setup frustrating and wouldn’t do it again. For those who really want DS emulation, the upcoming AyaNeo Flip DS might be a better option, despite its higher price.
